Beni kosode Japanese Maple
Beni kosode offers a most unusual foliage color. The small, pinkish-purple leaves are difficult to describe, and upon close inspection, reveal contrasting dark green areas of variegation. Acer palmatum
'Shishigashira'
Lion's Head Japanese Maple
"The 'lion's head' maple. Once seen, you'll always remember this maple! Its distinctive, upright branches are thickly covered with small, heavy textured, deep green crinkled leaves that are layered densely on outward spreading branches. Fall color is a brilliant orange, displayed very late in the fall, extending your garden's color display." - Iseli Nursery Catalog (wholesale)
This is one of my favorite maples both for its unusual leaves and its spectacular fall color!
The growth rate depends on the cultural care provided, but overall it is a semi-slow grower. Properly fertilized plants in the landscape will put on several inches of growth a year, which is quite slow, compared to most other palmatums. A great bonsai candidate because of its growth rate and small leaves! Has a roughly 20' max height at maturity. Full sun or part shade. Zone 5-9. Grafted on A. palmatum seedlings.

Acer saccharum
'Barrett Cole' (Apollo™)
Apollo™ Sugar Maple
A narrowly upright, fastigiate Sugar Maple with regular size leaves! Looks like a child trying on adult clothing. This tree was discovered by Mr. Robert Cole as a chance seedling growing in Pickaway County, Ohio. Although the parentage of this new variety is unknown, it is believed to be a chance seedling of Acer saccharum. The leaves in fall will turn yellow-orange to red. It has a dwarf to semi-dwarf growth rate (grows at 1/2 the rate of a typical sugar maple) but will eventually reach a height of 25 feet with a spread of 10 feet. Growth statistics from the plant's patent documents state trees were 17 feet tall at 13 years of age. Hardy to zone 4.

Cryptomeria japonica

"A beautiful cultivar with long, graceful whips of green foliage resembling that of the Norfolk Island Pine when mature...it provides a very distinctive texture, in fact, perhaps one of the best of the Cryptomeria in this regard." -Heronswood Nursery Catalog, 2003
The branches have also been described as 'snake-like' giving the overall tree an open appearance. Smaller in size to the species, expect somewhere close to 10-12 feet of height at full size. Full sun. Zone 5-8.

Cryptomeria japonica
'Spiralis'
Spiralis Japanese Cedar
Not your standard cryptomeria! This one will amaze even yourself, as you look closely at the way the needles on this japanese cedar literally curl around the stem. Additionally, the branches grow in an open fashion and are not as dense as the species, which adds to its character. Similar in size to the species, expect somewhere close to 20 feet of height with 8 foot width at full size. Full sun. Zone 5-8.

Fothergilla major
'Mt. Airy'
Mt. Airy Fothergilla
1994 Georgia Gold Medal Winner. It was discovered over 30 years ago by Dr. Michael Dirr in Mt. Airy Arboretum in Cincinnati, Ohio. `Mt. Airy' is a superior selection with larger blooms and more brilliant fall color than the native species. A real conversation piece in the spring landscape, with creamy-white, bottlebrush- type blooms that provide a sweet honey fragrance. The flowers are borne on naked stems before the foliage emerges, which makes the floral display even more dramatic. When fall arrives, Mt. Airy becomes a kaleidoscope of orange, yellow, and red and provides a dazzling display of rich autumn color in the landscape. It is a choice shrub for the perennial border or woodland environment. A massed planting of three to five plants provides a spectacular showing. It grows 5 to 6 feet tall with a spread of 6 feet. Prefers full sun or partial shade and well-drained soils.

Salix alba
'Curly Locks'
Curly Locks White Willow
One of those plants that people stop and say, "How unusual!" and then just want to touch it. The leaves on 'Curly Locks' are twisted into tight curls and located quite densely along stems that shoot out at all angles giving the whole tree a generally awkward, but unique appearance when young. No two trees are quite alike. Offered no other place on the web! Give it room though, it's a vigorous, fast grower that will give you about 2'-3' feet a year over a 20 year period. (40-60 feet tall at maturity) Full sun, great for wet areas of your landscape. Zones 2-9.
